MLA Style: Books

This guide provides information on how to cite using MLA, 9th edition.

General Information

To write a works cited entry for a book, you need the following pieces of information:

  1. Author
  2. Title of Source
  3. Title of Container (i.e. periodical, journal, magazine, website, database, podcast, etc.)
  4. Contributor (translators, editors, directors, etc.)
  5. Version (edition)
  6. Number (volume, issue, episode, etc.)
  7. Publisher
  8. Publication Date
  9. Location (page range, DOI, permalink, URL)
